Welcome to Laboratory Research Education Courses

All Mass General Brigham system-level trainings and courses relevant to conducting laboratory research are outlined below. Courses are categorized as Required, Core, and Elective. Note: Courses that are eligible for RCR credit are indicated as such below the link for Course Details.

To better help you identify the courses you need to take, we have created pages that organize courses based on either type of research – Human, Animal, Laboratory – or  different roles in research at Mass General Brigham – Investigators, Research Trainees, Research Staff. For each course, the icons below depict for which type of research and for whom the course is applicable.

RCO PI Education Series: Research Misconduct Prevention

This course is focused on scientific misconduct requirements for research funded by Public Health Service agencies e.g., NIH, CDC and FDA – which provide the majority of MGB federal research funding

RCO PI Education Series: Financial Stewardship of Grants and Contracts

This course provides an overview of federal, institutional, and sponsor requirements for financial management of grants and contracts to help investigators navigate a complex regulatory environment.

RCO Research Misconduct Prevention

This course introduces postdoctoral fellows to the basics of research misconduct prevention. It outlines federal and MGB requirements, the research misconduct review process, and identifies best practices for data management compliance.

RCO Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Seminar
The four-hour Mass General Brigham RCR seminar includes faculty presentations and discussions on authorship, data management; conflict of interest and interactions with industry; research misconduct.

RCO Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Refresher
RCR training is required to be completed at least once every four years. This 90-minute RCR Refresher course fulfills the RCR refresher requirement for trainees.

RCO IBC Required Laboratory Training
The IBC requires all individuals working in a research laboratory as well as study staff listed on a biosafety registration in Insight to complete this training annually to comply with federal regulations.

RCO Controlled Substances in Non-Human Research

This course is for all Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR) and DEA registrants and authorized users of controlled substances working in animal or basic research.

CORE COURSES

RCO Research Policy Overview: Transporting and Sharing Biological Materials

This course provides a high-level overview of institutional requirements for sharing and transporting research biological materials to protect the health, safety and security of staff.

RCO Federal Export Control Regulations and Compliance Awareness

This course provides an overview of basic federal Export Controls regulations, recent regulatory changes, and general compliance requirements and identifies research that may have an export component.

RCO Responsible Conduct of Research Using Biological Materials

This course provides an overview of the hazards in research laboratories, reviews the laws and regulations that govern research of biological materials and reviews biological safety procedures and practices

RCO Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Ethics Series

This ethics series offers 9-10 seminars per year for career development recipients under the T32, F31, F32, or any of the K award mechanisms. This program is eligible for RCR credit within the Mass General Brigham system.

ELECTIVE COURSES
RCO General Laboratory Safety
The Mass General Brigham Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) requires all individuals working in a research laboratory (i.e., laboratories with chemicals and/or biological agents) as well as study staff listed on a biosafety registration in Insight complete this training annually.

RCO Federal Export Control Regulations and Compliance Requirements
This 90-minute training introduces basic federal Export Controls regulations, recent regulatory changes, and general compliance requirements. Content is hospital-focused and includes case studies that address subjects such as excluded party screening.

RCO Compliance with Section 889, 2019 Federal Defense Authorization Act (FDAA), Covered Technologies
This 45-minute training provides information on the 889 compliance requirements for federal contractors. It addresses the following topics: section 889 prohibitions and effective practices

RCO Federal Export Controls Regulations and Compliance Requirements: Sponsored Research, Technology Transfer & Licensing Issues
This 45-minute training provides in-depth knowledge of export control laws, regulations, and compliance as applicable to hospital sponsored research contracting and licensing situations.

RCO Federal Export Controls Regulations and Compliance Requirements: International Advisory Services
This 45-minute training focuses on export controls issues that are applicable to negotiating and implementing advisory services agreements with hospitals located outside of the United States and its territories.
