NIH DATA MANAGEMENT & SHARING POLICY

In 2023, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued the final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) to promote the management and sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research. This Policy established the requirements of submission of Data Management and Sharing Plans and compliance with NIH Institute, Center, or Office (ICO)-approved Plans. It also emphasized the importance of good data management practices and established the expectation for maximizing the appropriate sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research, with justified limitations or exceptions. This Policy is applicable to research funded or conducted by NIH that results in the generation of scientific data.

Important Updates and Reminders

NEW: Updated NIH DMS Template. The MGB template for DMS plans has been updated to include additional notes and instructions for applications being sent to NIDDK. The updated template can be found here.

The Harvard Dataverse repository is a free data repository open to all researchers where you can share, archive, cite, access, and explore research data. Confidential, sensitive, identifiable (PHI or PII) data are not allowed to be deposited there.

REMINDER: Consultations with Joint Committee for  DMS plans are available. The MGB Joint Committee is available for DMS plan consultations or policy exception requests prior to grant submission. Requests must be at least 3 weeks in advance of your grant deadline and submitted via email.
